While Watt is officially handing over the reins to chief operating officer James Arrow, he is not disappearing entirely. Instead, he is taking on the newly created role of “captain and co-founder” and will be retaining 21% of the firm’s shareholding. Looking at other breweries that have followed in BrewDog’s footsteps when it comes to crowdfunding, Berkshire based Siren Craft Brew, recently launched a crowdfunding campaign in order to expand its business. When comparing these numbers to BrewDog’s annual volume sales in 2017 of 344,387 HL, the craft brewer is still on the small side of things. However, when delving into brewers who launched around the same time as BrewDog, the scale shifts.

A deal with Tesco got them off the ground, and they rolled up their sleeves and got started with what they really came here to do. Outlandish marketing stunts and a penchant for bending the rules used to be what made BrewDog stand out. Actually, it’s still what makes them stand out, albeit for far more nefarious reasons. Over the last 15 years, there’s been a big emphasis on growth at BrewDog. Regarding most of its figures, the key stats seem to be heading in the right direction. But, as BrewDog grows and aims to compete with the bigger alcohol companies and brewers, it risks becoming the type of company it set out to be the opposite of.

  1. The company has already proven it can raise plenty of money through crowdfunding, meaning it won’t be desperate to gain further funds through an IPO.
  2. Behind the move, there is the belief that carbon neutral is no longer enough and companies should instead do something to change the course of global warming.

Mr Watt adds that BrewDog’s products are bought by beer aficionados, and priced at a premium. He says that if someone is going to abuse alcohol they will be the cheaper, mass market beers that give drinkers „maximum bang for their buck“. BrewDog has also been criticised for selling some beers with exceptionally high alcohol rates, such as a limited edition ale that was 55% alcohol. In addition to the bold flavours, the two men also worked hard on creating an irreverent brand image for BrewDog, giving their beers fun names, and bright, colourful labels. Some of their other brews are called Dead Pony Pale Ale, Dogma and Hardcore IPA.

With Tesco wanting first deliveries in four months‘ time, Mr Watt and Mr Dickie, also now 32, went to their bank to ask for another £150,000, so they could quickly install a bottling line, and expand production. “Woodland creation of this scale is at the forefront of the fight to sequester atmospheric carbon in the U.K. And the BrewDog Forest will be one of the largest native woodlands created in the U.K.

Mr Watt says that he and Mr Dickie – who together own a 75% share of the business – remain unrepentant, and simply „make beers that we want to drink ourselves“. With BrewDog now being able to increase its brewing facilities, it was able to start supplying Tesco on time with bottles of its Punk IPA. Behind the move, there is the belief that carbon neutral is no longer enough and companies should instead do something to change the course of global warming. The strategy was developed in partnership with Mike Berners-Lee, carbon footprint expert and founder of the renewables and environment company Small World Consulting, who also led the process of calculating BrewDog’s carbon footprint. Also, a sustainable campsite will host events for the general public and the brewer will be working with offset partners in order to double remove all of its carbon until it is able to begin the planting in early 2021.

It will be the first of many pieces of criticism over its product names. In August 2018, BrewDog debuted the DogHouse, a hotel at its brewery in Columbus. The hotel offers beer around every corner, from the shower to the breakfast menu. In addition to its breweries, BrewDog has upwards of 90 bars around the world.

It positions itself as a brewery created by and for “punks,” from its “Equity for Punks” investor program to its flagship Punk IPA. BrewDog’s rise to the top is an impressive one, as much for its methods as it is for its speed, and the brewer has provided no shortage of talking points along the way. Recognised ahead of the company’s leadership is its appetite for controversy, for which BrewDog is renowned not just in its native land, but also internationally.

In 2019 the ASA launches an investigation into BrewDog after a number of complaints about an ad for its non-alcoholic IPA – Punk AF – which reads ‘Sober as a Motherfu,’ cutting off two letters to eliminate but allude to the swear word. Brother and sister owners Joshua and Sallie McFadyen say they chose the name in 2015, long before BrewDog launched its spirits brand, but decide not to fight against the brand for fears of financial repercussions. In 2017, Brewdog launched a “paw-ternity” leave program allowing employees a week of paid leave to start life with their new four-legged family member.

An IPO creates public awareness, putting the company under the spotlight. Timing of an IPO is crucial for a company if it wants to maximise its capital-raising potential and increase its valuation due to demand from investors and the market. An ad that claimed the brewer’s fruit-flavored beers counted towards “one of your five the logic behind the bonds that eat your money a day” is pulled by the Advertising Standards Authority, which claims it is misleading.
